Vik Patel on Diwali

Hi Vik! Can you tell us a bit about how you might define Diwali in your own words?

Diwali is referred to as the ‘Festival of Lights’ and is generally defined as ‘light’ triumphing over ‘darkness’ or ‘good’ over ‘evil’. It’s the biggest and most important holiday in the Hindu calendar and is celebrated by millions of people around the world.

What does Diwali’s symbolism mean to you?

It gives me an opportunity to reflect on my life, to remind myself of the importance of family and those closest to me while also encouraging me to focus on self-improvement, forgiveness and hopefulness.

Can you share any family traditions in honor of Diwali?

Some family traditions include a handful of Hindu ceremonies including Lakshmi Puja as well as more generally spending time with family and eating lots of food! We also place many Diya lights (tealights or similar) around our house to welcome God into our homes and to ask for their blessings.

What is your favorite memory celebrating Diwali growing up?

Going to the Hare Krishna temple in Watford and seeing the incredible fireworks display they have on every year. Definitely recommend!

What do you wish more people knew about the holiday?

In addition to Diya lights, families also paint small swastika’s around and just outside their home. This is a religious and cultural symbol for Hindus going back millenia. It does not mean what you think it does…(much to the surprise of my local postman!)
